Globally, nearly 80% of long-term care is provided informally by families and unpaid caregivers (WHO, 2021). In Africa, where systems are often overstretched, this reliance is even more pronounced. Yet these caregivers are rarely trained, supported, or recognized.
•1 in 6 Nigerians will be over 60 by 2050 (UN DESA, 2019), creating urgent demand for community and home-based care.
•The economic value of unpaid caregiving worldwide exceeds $1.5 trillion annually (ILO, 2022).
•Africa’s digital health sector is growing at 25% CAGR (IFC, 2023), signaling both demand and opportunity for new care models.
These numbers tell us one thing: the current design of healthcare cannot meet tomorrow’s needs unless we reimagine it—beyond institutions, into homes, families, and communities.
